Trust Yourself: Clear Moves for New Leaders Who Want to Decide with Confidence

Apr 17, 2025

What if the real reason you’re struggling to make decisions as a leader isn’t about confidence… but clarity?

If you’re new in a leadership role, chances are you’ve found yourself in a moment of indecision. You overthink. You wait. You question whether you’re doing it “right.” But here’s what I want you to hear loud and clear:

Leadership isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being clear enough to move forward.

And yes, you can get there. I’ve got you.

Why Decision-Making Can Feel So Hard

Stepping into leadership brings new opportunities, but let’s be honest – it also comes with a heavy dose of pressure. One of the biggest hurdles I see with new and emerging leaders? Decision paralysis.

You’re not alone in second-guessing yourself. Many high-achieving professionals I coach wrestle with the same thing. But here’s the deal: it’s not a time problem or even a confidence problem – it’s a clarity problem.

When you’re not clear on what truly matters, everything feels urgent. Every decision feels high stakes. You end up stuck, spinning, or playing it safe. That’s not the kind of leadership that creates sustainable momentum.

Mindset Shift #1 – Clarity Makes Decisions Easier (and Smarter)

Clarity is your decision-making superpower. When you know what matters – your values, your priorities, your bigger-picture vision – decisions become a whole lot simpler.

Let’s say you’re dealing with a team issue. You hesitate because you don’t want to rock the boat. But if your leadership values include open communication and accountability, then the decision becomes clearer: you address it, directly and respectfully.

That’s a Clear Move.

Your move: Identify your top 3 leadership values or priorities. When you’re stuck, ask yourself: Does this decision align with what I say matters most? The Key? You don’t need to focus on everything. Just the right things for the move you want to make.

Mindset Shift #2 – From Fear of Failing to Leading with Learning

Here’s another shift to make: Stop looking at mistakes as failures. They’re feedback. They’re growth. They’re part of the deal.

Two of the mindset shifts I teach in NLP is: (1) There is NO failure, only feedback, and (2) You are in charge of your mind, and therefore, your results. A mistake is merely a decision that didn’t serve you well. You can make a different decision the next time with new, updated information. When you shift your mindset, your results shift too.

Instead of asking, “What if I get this wrong?”, take appropriate action and think, “No matter what, I’ll learn something new when I take this next step.”

You’re not here to be flawless—you’re here to learn, adapt, and move forward with more clarity each time.

The Next Clear Step: How to Decide with Confidence

If you’re ready to start building real confidence in your leadership decisions, here’s how:

  1. Clarify the Goal
Before you make the decision, zoom out. What’s the bigger picture you’re working toward? Let that be your filter.
  2. Gather, Don’t Drown
You don’t need all the information – just the essentials. Get what you need, then move. Clarity isn’t found in more research; it’s found in action.
  3. Trust Your Gut (Really)
Your instincts are built from experience, even if you don’t realize it yet. If a decision feels right logically and intuitively, trust yourself.
  4. Take the Step, Then Adjust
No decision is permanent. Make a Clear Move, and course-correct if needed. That’s how real leaders operate.
  5. Seek Support—Not Permission
Talk it through with a mentor, but don’t outsource the decision. You’ve got this. This is your leadership journey.

Ready for Your Next Clear Move?

Here’s a simple plan to put all of this into practice – within the next 48 hours.

→ Write down one decision you’ve been avoiding.
Be honest – what’s keeping you stuck?

→ Run it through your clarity filter.
Does it align with your values, your vision, and what matters most?

→ Set a deadline.
Make the decision and take action in the next 48 hours. Don’t wait for confidence – build it.

→ Reflect and refine.
After you act, ask yourself: What worked? What would I do differently next time? That’s how clarity compounds.

You don’t need to have it all figured out. You just need to take The Next Clear Step. And you are absolutely capable of that.
